A great gift, this set provides a cook with enough versatility to accomplish most kitchen jobs. The chef’s knife, with its broad blade and curved cutting edge for rocking through a chopping task, chops, minces, slices, and dices. The utility knife slices, cuts, and chops; its 5-inch blade is large enough to trim a chuck roast or subdue a head of lettuce. The paring knife cuts, peels, and cleans fruits and vegetables. Henckels’s International Fine Edge is an inexpensive cutlery line made in countries other than the company’s home of Germany. These knives don’t have bolsters, and their blades are thinner and less strong than those of the company’s premier lines. Handles are narrower and shallower, as well–a feature those with small hands might appreciate. –Fred Brack
