A great gift, this set provides a cook with enough versatility to accomplish most kitchen jobs. The chef’s knife, with its broad blade and curved cutting edge for rocking through a chopping task, chops, minces, slices, and dices. The utility knife slices, cuts, and chops; its 5-inch blade is large enough to trim a chuck roast or subdue a head of lettuce. The paring knife cuts, peels, and cleans fruits and vegetables. Henckels’s International Fine Edge is an inexpensive cutlery line made in countries other than the company’s home of Germany. These knives don’t have bolsters, and their blades are thinner and less strong than those of the company’s premier lines. Handles are narrower and shallower, as well–a feature those with small hands might appreciate. –Fred Brack

Henckels’s International line offers affordable cutlery from one of the world’s most renowned knife manufacturers. A great value for a novice cook, this 13-piece set contains the following: 2-3/4-inch paring knife, 6-inch utility knife, 8-inch chef’s knife, 8-inch bread knife, 5-1/2-inch boning knife, six 4-1/2-inch steak knives, 9-inch sharpening steel, and a graphite-painted storage block. Formed of contoured, almost cushy santoprene, the handles are handsomely-backed with brushed stainless steel for added leverage and a sleek, contemporary look. Fine Edge Synergy knives are constructed of stamped German stainless steel with hand-honed blades that can be resharpened (unlike the company’s Everedge knives that have identical handles but micro-serrated edges).
